I Tried an F1 Pit Stop: BBC Presenter joins Haas

Imagine watching Formula 1 cars zoom around a track at high speeds. A single pit stop during a match can decide who wins or loses the big race.

F1 commentators usually watch from high above in a comfortable room. However, presenter Harry Benjamin decided to leave his microphone behind and visit the Haas team garage. He wanted to see if an ordinary person could change a heavy F1 tyre in real conditions. In a modern race, pit crew members change four wheels on a fast racing car in under two seconds. The process is extremely fast and very hard to master without years of physical training. When Harry put on the protective helmet and held the heavy air gun, he realized how intense the work really is. Every single movement must be perfect because one small mistake costs crucial time. Harry had to learn how to remove the wheel nut and put on a fresh tire without delaying the driver. The heavy tools made his arms shake, and the loud noise tested his concentration. He quickly learned that these mechanics practice every day to make their actions look simple on television.

Running a pit stop looks easy on TV, but doing it in real life takes incredible energy and skill. Harry got a tiny taste of what F1 mechanics experience during every race weekend.
