How Online Gambling Harms Vulnerable Refugee Communities

Imagine losing your hard-earned cash on a small smartphone screen every single day. Online betting has become a massive global business worth one hundred billion dollars. Powerful gambling platforms write software designed to keep you addicted to placing bets whenever you tap your screen.

In crowded refugee camps where Rohingya families live, daily survival is extremely difficult. Most young refugees have no legal permission to work, so they spend long hours using cheap smartphones. Betting apps quickly target these bored young adults with promises of easy cash. People hope to win big money to help their families, but they almost always lose their small savings instead. To keep playing, many young men choose to borrow money from local informal lenders at high interest rates. This practice creates massive debt that victims can never repay. Consequently, terrible conflict breaks out inside stressed households, leaving parents unable to buy daily food or basic medicines. Organized criminal groups quickly move in to control this illegal money and exploit the poor population. These predatory companies continue to operate without any real local rules to stop them from taking advantage of families.

When digital gambling enters fragile places, it destroys lives very quickly. Protecting every vulnerable family from these digital traps remains a huge challenge for human rights workers today.
