The Physics of Fast Charging: Electromagnetic Induction

The phenomenon of electromagnetic induction is a well-established principle in physics, describing the production of an electromotive force across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field. When an appliance such as a hair dryer is in operation, it generates a magnetic field that induces a voltage in the coil. This voltage can be so high that it ionizes the air between the plug and the socket, producing a spark.

However, this same effect can be harnessed to create fast charging technology. By employing a technique called switching, chargers rapidly turn the current on and off hundreds of thousands of times per second. To smooth out these electrical pulses, a component called an inductor is used, which acts as a shock absorber, storing energy in a magnetic field when the current rises and releasing it when the current falls.

The use of inductors in fast charging technology has led to the development of more compact and efficient chargers. By using a technique called MBuck, chargers can convert high voltage electricity to low voltage DC electricity more efficiently, reducing the size of the inductor required. This has enabled the creation of fast chargers that are smaller and more portable, making them ideal for use on-the-go.
