By tagging juvenile white sharks and playing them recordings of people in the water, the researchers have discovered that sharks can detect these sounds from a distance of approximately 100 feet. However, the sharks largely ignored the sounds, suggesting that they can differentiate between people and prey.
The researchers believe that sharks have developed a mechanism to tune out the sounds of people in the water. This is likely due to the fact that sharks encounter people frequently and have learned to associate them with a lack of food. As a result, sharks do not perceive people as a threat or a source of nourishment. This challenges the common perception that sharks are mindless killers, as often portrayed in popular media such as Shark Week.
Sightings of sharks are on the rise along the coast, prompting authorities to employ drones as a means of monitoring the situation. The drones are equipped with technology that enables them to detect sharks from a distance, providing an effective means of surveillance. In one instance, 16 sharks were spotted in the first 5 days of July, with 7 of them being identified by the drones. The increase in shark sightings is attributed to the warming of the waters and the growth of bait fish and seal populations, which are attracting sharks to the area.
