The rise of socialism in America is a complex issue. Historically, America has been hostile to socialist politics. In the 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville observed that Americans loved property and were wary of anything that threatened it. In 1892, Friedrich Engels complained about America's unique prejudices against socialism. Despite this, the Socialist Party of America was founded in 1901 and had pockets of electoral strength, including in Milwaukee.
However, socialism never really took off in the US. One reason was that American workers earned more and were more likely to own land. Additionally, America's two-party system made it difficult for new parties like the Socialist Party to break through. The Socialist Party eventually died off, and most socialists joined the Democratic Party, where they formed the Democratic Socialists of America.
Today, the DSA is winning elections across the country, including in New York City. This has sparked concerns about the Democratic Party moving too far to the left. However, some people think that socialism is a good thing, and that it could be the key to addressing income inequality and other social issues.
