The Science Behind the Cool Plant

Scientists have discovered that a plant can be cooler than its surroundings, even when it's in direct sunlight. This is because of a process called evaporation. When a plant absorbs sunlight, it can do two things: heat up or evaporate water. Most of the time, concrete absorbs sunlight and turns it into heat. But plants are different because they have a lot of water inside their leaves. When the plant opens its pores to let in carbon dioxide, the water inside the leaf meets the hot air and evaporates. This takes a lot of energy, and that energy is pulled straight out of the leaf.

As a result, up to 50% of the sunlight a plant absorbs goes into evaporating water instead of heating it up. This is why the plant stays cool. You can also feel this effect in a park on a hot day. The green spaces in the park can cool the surrounding air by up to 2.8° C even in the dense city center.

Just like green spaces, cities and chargers need to manage heat to work properly. Chargers convert AC power to DC power, but this process is never 100% efficient, and the leftover energy gets turned into heat. Anker, a technology company, has built their Anker Prime Charger with a unique thermal silicone that helps carry that heat away. They have also designed an L-shaped graphene structure that draws heat away from the hottest components towards cooler areas. Additionally, their Active Shield 4.0 checks the temperature 10 million times per day to keep the charger at perfect operating temperatures.
