What is El Nino?

El Nino is a big weather event. It happens in the Pacific Ocean and makes the water get warmer. This is bad news for the planet.

We need to understand trade winds. They blow from east to west and help transport warm water to Asia and Oceania. But sometimes, the trade winds get weaker or change direction, and the warm water goes back to the eastern Pacific. This is called an El Nino event.

El Nino makes the ocean water get warmer in South America, and this brings heavy rains. But in Asia and Oceania, it's the opposite - they get less rain and it's drier.
