Over the last forty years, companies moved work to Asia because the cost was much lower. Today, making a product takes many steps and hundreds of parts. If you want to make an electronic device, you do not just need a worker to put it together. You also need small screws, glass screens, battery cells, and circuit boards. In China, every small tool and part is made in the same city. Trucks can ship these pieces across the street in ten minutes. If American businesses want to return, they cannot find every local supply ready to go. Building new plants takes years, and companies must pay higher wages. This means the final price you pay in the store could go up a lot.
Bringing jobs home sounds like a simple promise during election season. In reality, modern production is tied to a global web that took decades to build. Finding a quick fix will not be as easy as it sounds.
